Haapsalu

1 Day

Overview

Haapsalu’s enchanting old town with its wooden lace architecture, beautiful seaside promenade, and cozy cafes create the perfect setting for an unforgettable holiday. Here, health and culture enthusiasts are welcomed by warm seawater and world-famous therapeutic mud, offering true relaxation amidst a historic ambiance. The holiday experience is enhanced by the majestic Haapsalu Episcopal Castle, home to Estonia’s most famous ghost, the White Lady, making the town one of the most romantic destinations in Estonia.

Haapsalu is a true gem among coastal towns, and its hallmark is the historic and grand railway station. It was originally built to be exceptionally long, ensuring that the Tsar’s train, with its numerous carriages, could fit completely and comfortably alongside the platform. Visitors can take a walk among authentic vintage locomotives and carriages, as well as visit the Railway and Communications Museum. This offers a unique opportunity to feel the travel atmosphere of bygone eras and get a close-up look at these giant machines.

As Haapsalu is located right on the seafront, our path leads along the romantic seaside promenade, where one can admire the town’s famous wooden lace architecture. We will stop at the Tchaikovsky Bench—it is known that the composer loved to sit in this very spot, watch the sea, and enjoy the sunset. The Kuursaal (Resort Hall), which still houses a restaurant today, was a place where summer vacationers would gather to enjoy concerts and dance after their mud baths and seawater procedures.

Ilon’s Wonderland is a place where everyone’s childhood comes alive. Her own childhood was spent right here in Haapsalu, and these very same wooden houses and courtyards inspired her illustrations for Astrid Lindgren’s books.

We will climb the Tagalaht birdwatching tower, which is the perfect vantage point for enjoying the enchanting landscape of Haapsalu Bay. Haapsalu is known for its shallow and warm bay, which serves as an important stopover for migratory birds—with a bit of luck, one can spot swans and ducks from here.

The heart of the town is the Town Hall, which today houses the Läänemaa Museum, keeping alive the stories of Haapsalu’s golden ages, famous summer vacationers, and local daily life.
