This tour is a journey through time, taking you in just a few hours from medieval sanctuaries through a Soviet-era mining town’s “Indian slum,” making a detour into traditional Estonian village life, and finally immersing you in the heart of nature. It is a story of Estonia’s history, where vastly different worlds exist just a short distance apart.

The journey begins at the Saha Chapel of St. Nicholas. This is a true historical gem—one of the oldest and most completely preserved medieval stone chapels in Estonia. From there, we move on to Maardu, a former mining town. Here, we experience a real “time machine”: driving through a cityscape that echoes Soviet-era reality, we suddenly descend the hill and find ourselves in the 16th-century village of Rootsi-Kallavere. Life in this historic village community moves to a completely different rhythm than in the town above. The exhibits in the village museum tell authentic stories of this location’s rich and resilient past.

Driving through the Maardu allotment shantytown, you can only watch in amazement. This area emerged illegally during the Soviet era, with people building their houses and gardens out of whatever scrap materials they could find. It serves as a living example that you don’t have to travel to India to find slum architecture—it is unexpectedly closer to home than you might think.

Next, we travel back to ancient times by visiting the Rebala stone-cist graves, historically known as child-cairns). Interestingly, these rare ancient burial mounds did not get their name from children buried there, but rather from young herders who loved to climb the ancient stones to keep watch over their cattle. We will also pause at the edge of the Maardu open-cast mining trench, a stark testament to a landscape reshaped by human hands.

Before entering the Jõelähtme Church, we will stop to pay tribute to the local men who fought for Estonia’s freedom. The history of Jõelähtme Church itself dates back to the 13th century, marking the arrival of the Danes and the establishment of Christianity in these lands.

To conclude the day, we will visit Jägala Waterfall, the widest natural waterfall in Estonia, and the Linnamäe Hydroelectric Power Plant dam, which was declared a cultural monument in 2016. For the bravest adventurers, there is also an opportunity to cross the Jägala River via a swaying suspension bridge.

Paldiski is a place that has been shrouded in a veil of secrecy for decades. During the Soviet era, it was a completely closed military town that didn’t even exist on maps for ordinary citizens. Although no traces remain today of the once-massive nuclear submarine training centre—affectionately known as the “Pentagon”—a mysterious atmosphere still lingers over this coastal town, inviting you to explore its hidden history.

However, Paldiski’s past stretches much further back than the Soviet period. Once known as Ragerwick, this port was a favourite of Peter the Great because the surrounding waters remain ice-free year-round. While Kadriorg Palace was being planned for Tallinn, a massive bastion was commissioned here instead. You can still marvel at the sheer scale of his ambitions today by walking through the historic Muula Hills.

Today, Paldiski and the Pakri Peninsula offer experiences for every kind of adventurer. It is home to the Pakri Lighthouse, the tallest lighthouse in Estonia. On a clear day, you can climb to its outdoor viewing platform to catch mesmerising, sweeping views of the open sea. This is also the perfect place to experience the raw power of green energy—here, you can stand close to a modern wind farm and hear the distinct hum of giant turbine blades catching the breeze. Adding a touch of distinct local colour are the traditional dachas (summer cottages), which have become a unique sight in their own right.

For those interested in culture and architecture, the town boasts several historic churches. The most impressive among them is undoubtedly the Church of St. Sergius of Radonezh, an exquisite wooden structure operating under the Moscow Patriarchate. For art lovers, a mandatory stop is the studio museum of Amandus Adamson, the legendary sculptor behind Tallinn’s famous Russalka monument. This charming, intricate “dollhouse” offers an intimate glimpse into the immense talent and life of the great master.

Your journey can culminate at the majestic Paldiski railway station main building. Dating back to 1870, this historic station marks the very year the historic Paldiski–Tallinn–St. Petersburg railway line was first opened to the world.

Haapsalu’s enchanting old town with its wooden lace architecture, beautiful seaside promenade, and cozy cafes create the perfect setting for an unforgettable holiday. Here, health…

Haapsalu’s enchanting old town with its wooden lace architecture, beautiful seaside promenade, and cozy cafes create the perfect setting for an unforgettable holiday. Here, health and culture enthusiasts are welcomed by warm seawater and world-famous therapeutic mud, offering true relaxation amidst a historic ambiance. The holiday experience is enhanced by the majestic Haapsalu Episcopal Castle, home to Estonia’s most famous ghost, the White Lady, making the town one of the most romantic destinations in Estonia.

Haapsalu is a true gem among coastal towns, and its hallmark is the historic and grand railway station. It was originally built to be exceptionally long, ensuring that the Tsar’s train, with its numerous carriages, could fit completely and comfortably alongside the platform. Visitors can take a walk among authentic vintage locomotives and carriages, as well as visit the Railway and Communications Museum. This offers a unique opportunity to feel the travel atmosphere of bygone eras and get a close-up look at these giant machines.

As Haapsalu is located right on the seafront, our path leads along the romantic seaside promenade, where one can admire the town’s famous wooden lace architecture. We will stop at the Tchaikovsky Bench—it is known that the composer loved to sit in this very spot, watch the sea, and enjoy the sunset. The Kuursaal (Resort Hall), which still houses a restaurant today, was a place where summer vacationers would gather to enjoy concerts and dance after their mud baths and seawater procedures.

Ilon’s Wonderland is a place where everyone’s childhood comes alive. Her own childhood was spent right here in Haapsalu, and these very same wooden houses and courtyards inspired her illustrations for Astrid Lindgren’s books.

We will climb the Tagalaht birdwatching tower, which is the perfect vantage point for enjoying the enchanting landscape of Haapsalu Bay. Haapsalu is known for its shallow and warm bay, which serves as an important stopover for migratory birds—with a bit of luck, one can spot swans and ducks from here.

The heart of the town is the Town Hall, which today houses the Läänemaa Museum, keeping alive the stories of Haapsalu’s golden ages, famous summer vacationers, and local daily life.
